This disk contains Studio V1.12. Version numbers shown by the
programs on this disk may differ and are only updated in case the
program itself was changed.
This file contain notes about changes made after printing the
manual. We also feel that it is your right to have the
information about changes made to previous versions:
------------------------------------------------------------------
LaserDriver now supports controlling various non permanent printer
settings using PJL:
"Job Timeout" Duration of printer I/O timeout in seconds. If the
printer waits longer than the timeout value without
receiving any data, it ends the print job and begins
accepting data rfom other I/O ports, if any.
Do not confuse "Job Timeout" with the driver timeout
setting available in the main window of LaserPref!
"Resolution" Sets the printers max resolution (not driver resolution!)
Allways set "Resolution" to 600 for 600 dpi printers.
Setting "Max.Res." to 600 dpi without setting the
printer to 600 dpi (via "Resolution" of printer panel)
does not work!
"RET" Configuration of the Resolution Enhancement hardware.
Resolution Enhancement technology (RET) improves the
print quality of characters and graphics by smoothing
the edges of lines.
"Protect" The page protection feature reserves a block of printer
memory to prevent printer overrun errors (error 21)
when printing very dense or complex images. This
variable can be set to any legal value at any time,
regardless of the current amount of free printer memory
or the current set resolution. When a job is sent,
if there is not enough memory to print correctly with
the current resolution and page protection configuration,
the printer temporarily overrides the resolution and/or page
protect values to run the job. In these cases, the job
may be printed at 300 dpi (on 600 dpi printers) and
without page protection. When the page protection status
is changed, printer memory is reconfigured and all used
defined downloaded fonts, PCL macros, and PostScript
dictionaries are lost (however, no I/O data is lost).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Beside LaserPref, a program named "SetupPJL" gets installed for
Laserjet 4L/4/4M/4SI/4MX users.
SetupPJL makes use of Hewlett-Packard's "Printer Job Language" for
controlling printer settings. This program is usefull to all
Laserjet 4 series printers. For Laserjet 4L users this program is
the only way for controlling the printer NVRAM settings that can't
be accessed through the printers front panel.
Like all the other Studio programs, SetupPJL can be redirected to
public screens using the PUBSCREEN option. Also, SetupPJL supports
the TOPAZ argument.
Because the normal Amiga port doesn't allow reading the printer
settings, SetupPJL also saves the settings sent to the printer in
a file ("SetupPJL.prefs" in the drawer of the SetupPJL program).
Next time you start SetupPJL, the current printer settings are
shown thanks to the file saved. This method only works as long as
SetupPJL is used for all printer setting changes.
Not all settings shown in the main window are supported by one
printer. For instance, Economy and Imageadapt are supported by
the Laserjet 4L but not 4 or 4M. Unsupported settings are ignored
by the printer.
Economy: This mode reduce the amount of toner placed on the page.
Supported by 4L.
Imageadapt: Default for Image Adapt. This algorithem will
possibly cause a Lossy compression (as worse case) to be
used on the page. ON causes the Lossy compression
to be used on any images that need to have compression
performed. AUTO causes the printer to evaluate other
compression alternatives first before Lossy is considered.
OFF causes no use of the Lossy compression (but memory outs
may occur).
RET: Default for Resolution Enhancement. Resolution Enhancement
Technology (RET) improves the print quality of characters
and graphics by smoothing the edges of lines.
Symbol: This sets the default symbol set. Note that setting this
variabe can have an effect on the font used.
Copies: Default for the number of copies of each page. If the
value is outside of the range (1-999), it is snapped to
the closer limit.
Formlines: Default number of lines per page. If the
value is outside of the range (5-128), it is snapped to
the closer limit.
Paper: Default paper size.
Orientation: Default page orientation.
Pageprotect: Default for page protection. The Laserjet 4
supports various paper size for page protection to
prevent. The Laserjet 4L uses a slightly different
algorithem for page protection. AUTO causes the printer
to make an educated guess as to whether protection is
needed, and ON causes the printer to automaticly perform
page protection.
Autocont: Default for auto-continue. This causes the printer to
automaticly continue from certain errors after 10 seconds
has expired with no further errors.
ManualFeed: Default for Manual Feed.
Density: Default for Line Density. Values rage from 1 to 5, and
allows adjustment to alter the apparent quality of the print.
Resol.: Printer engine resolution (300 or 600 dpi). Use "n.d." for not
setting a resolution.
Personality: Personality for implicit switching (implicit
switching refers to switching to the default personality
without explicitly doing so with PJL). If the AUTO
option is selected, and a job is sent without a PJL
command, the printer looks for context clues to determine
wich personality takes effect.
Time: Duration of I/O timeouts in seconds. If the printer waits
longer than the timeout value without receiving any data,
it ends the print job and begins accepting data from
other I/O ports, if any.
WARNING: Changing printer permanent parameters using PJL may
cause major problems in case the printer is used in a network from
various people. SetupPJL should only be used by the system
administrator in networks!
------------------------------------------------------------------
For Panasonic 24 pin users a new SetupKXP program gets installed.
This program may be used by KX-P2023 users for controlling the
printer settings. The use of this program is very similar to the
MS-DOS or Windows program described in the printer manual.
For use with the Studio Workbench driver set the printers
parameter to (this is the factory setting for printers sold in the
USA!):
Int. Character Set = USA
Code Page = PC 437
Emulation = Epson
------------------------------------------------------------------
PCL 5C setting added to DeskDriver4C, making the driver PCL 5C
compatible (required by Deskjet1200 and Paintjet 300XL).
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Paintjet 300XL and Deskjet 1200C are now affected by the
DeskDriver4C "Quality" and "Media" setting:

Printing using the new Ricoh LP1200 Layout Language support:
- set Max.Res. in LaserPref to 400 dpi.
- set Language in LaserPref to Ricoh Layout.
This allows you to print 400 dpi on Ricoh LP1200 printers. It is
a requirement of "Layout" to print 400 dpi in all density
settings. To print with less than 400 dpi simply set Max.Res back
to 300 dpi.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Some information was missing from the "Maximum printing area"
description in the "Tips&Trick" chapter of some manuals. "Top
Margin" must be set to zero for the example. LaserDriver users
should use the new Wide/Narrow-tractor feature mentioned below.
So here you get the full example:
* Set your printers dip switches to DIN A4.
* Select the CUSTOM paper format in the Workbench preferences
program. Studio drivers allow you to define a paper format for
graphics using the Custom ResX and Custom ResY parameters if
CUSTOM is selected.
* Set "Paper Length" to 68 lines in Workbench preferences. The
Workbench manuals and preferences programs use the definition
"Page Length", where "Text Length" should be used. Text length is
defined as the page length minus the top and bottom margins.
* Start the DeskPref program and click on the "Page Size
Control..." button. A window should appear with more page size
parameters.
* Set "Custom ResX" to 2400 dots (20.32cm) and "Custom ResY" to
3357 dots (28.42cm). In case you you also print using color mode,
set "Custom ResY" to 3307 dots. The Deskjet 550C allows 3319
lines coloured graphics.
* Set "Paper Length" (this time "Paper Length" is meant as page
size with top and bottom margin) to 71 lines.
* Set "Top Margin" to 0 lines.
* Disable "Perforation Skip". In case of unwanted formfeeds during
text prints enable perforation skip (this shouldn't happen on
US-Letter paper... but sometimes does happen on A4 paper size).
------------------------------------------------------------------
Different to the original DJ550C PageStream driver, the Studio
DeskJet4C PageStream driver uses a fast compression scheme (Mode
023) and allows full control over depletion, shingling, paper
type, print quality and paper size using the PageStream "Special"
gadget in the printer requester. Also, using the pcl5 option, you
can make the driver working with Deskjet 1200 and Paintjet 300XL
printers.
Here are the supported commands (case-sensitive!) wich may be
combined using a '+' character:
pcl5 - use for PCL 5C compatible printers, that are
not compatible with the Deskjet 550C:
Deskjet 1200 and Paintjet 300XL.
letter - use US-Letter paper
legal - use US-Legal paper
a4 - use DIN A4 paper
a3 - use DIN A3 paper (for PaintJet 300XL)
ledger - use Ledger paper (for PaintJet 300XL)
10envelope - use #10 envelope
dlenvelope - use DL envelope
c5envelope - use C5 envelope (for Deskjet 1200C)
The following settings are not supported by the Deskjet 1200C and
Paintjet 300XL:
shingl=0 - use 0% shingling
shingl=25 - use 25% shingling
shingl=50 - use 50% shingling
depl=0 - use 0% depletion
depl=25 - use 25% depletion
depl=50 - use 50% depletion
deplg=25 - use 25% depletion with gamma function
deplg=50 - use 50% depletion with gamma function
normal - use normal graphic print quality
high - use high quality graphic print mode
The following settings are only supported by the Deskjet 1200C and
Paintjet 300XL
special - use special paper type print mode
plain - use plain paper type print mode
glossy - use glossy film paper type print mode
trans - use transparency film paper type print mode
For instance, for printing on DIN A4 paper with 25% shingling,
25% depletion, and gamma function, set the PageStream Special
gadget to:
"a4+shingl=25+depl=25"
------------------------------------------------------------------
Dry Hold Time:
When a page is ejected from the printer, the ink on the page may
not yet be completely dry. The time a printed page takes to dry
can depend on the density of ink placed on the print media, and
environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity. The
"Dry Hold" integer gadget can be used to allow a minimum drying
time before a page is dropped onto any preceding pages in the
printer output tray. "Dry Hold" (or the StudioDry environment
var) doesn't specify an absolute length of time a page is held in
the drying rack before it is dropped into the output tray, rather
the time it takes to print is subtracted from the specified dry
time. The resulting value is the length of time the page is held
(if at all) in the printer's drying rack.
Default value 0:
- 15 seconds for letter quality printing.
- 10 seconds for draft quality printing.
If the printer's input buffer becomes nearly full while in "Dry
Hold"-Mode, the printer will enter a special mode, where the data
is accepted one byte per second. This is done to ensure data bytes
are received the entire time the printer is in Dry Hold Mode, so
the printer device performing the printing doesn't erreously
detect a printer time out.
------------------------------------------------------------------
In case Narrow- or Wide-Tractor paper size is set in preferences,
you can print graphics using your max. DIN A4 (Narrow) or
US-Letter (Wide) printing area. Note: this mode does NOT work
with text. You will loose you first text line on each page! This
mode is only intended for all those DTP/Graphics freaks out there.
Also, on some printers the printer may stay active after printing,
indicating a page is still printing. You can ignore this or in
case of trouble on a network printer, use the Custom-ResX/Y
options (wich gives you a ~30 dots less height print area).
DeskDriver4C now supports two new paper sizes using the Narrow-
and Wide-Tractor Preferences setting:
Narrow-Tractor = Ledger
Wide-Tractor = A3
These new paper sizes can be used on Paintjet 300XL printers.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Use the new "PPage Off" setting in LaserPref to get rid of the
annoying Professional Page (PPage) and Professional Draw (PDraw)
offset. A "Top Margin" of 0 is automaticly set be this mode.
Note: you MUST use the Wide-Tractor (US-Letter) or Narrow-Tractor
(DIN A4) preference paper size for this mode to get active.
Otherwise only PJL is used for "PJL & PPage".
WARNING: Do not print text in the PPage Language mode or you will
loose the two top lines of text on each page. Also, do not use
these modi for other programs than PPage and PDraw!
In case you want to print normal text, simply switch back to DIN
A4 or US-Letter paper size in preferences.

Studio History:
E = removed bug
C = changed
I = improvement
12.11.92 V1
First release
31.12.92 V1.01
I 600 dpi density added to PageStream PCL driver.
This density can be used on the new HP IV / 4M
printer (looks great!).
E LaserDriver V1.00 image size was wrong in case
600 dpi and density 2 was used.
I LaserDriver V1.01 now switches printer
to 600 dpi if PJL is used and Max.
Highres is set to 600 dpi.
C LaserDriver V1.01 graphics are now printed
in orientation of logical page instead of the
physical page.
I PacificPage PostScript cartridges are now supported
by the LaserDriver.
I New compression schemes are now supported by DeskDriver
DeskDriver4C and LaserDriver. This causes a major
speed improvement of the driver.
E "StudioSuper" environment var was ignored under Kickstart 1.3
I Remaining print time shown by the Studio printing program
is now more precise.
I Selecting a wanted dither method is now done by an easy
to use listview gadget.
I 100 new fonts added to the typeface base database.
I Studio now allows the usage of printer drivers that do not
support printing with stripes.
26.01.93 V1.02
E Studio V1.01 "Custom-Dither" routines didn't worked in color
mode because of a Compiler bug.
E DeskDriver/DeskDriver4C V1.01 may not worked without compression
(who uses the driver without compression anyway?)
27.01.93 V1.03
I ~100 typefaces added to the LaserPref/DeskPref/DeskPref4C
typeface database.
I C programs recompiled with SAS/C V6.2
I DeskDriver4C now supports aSFC (colored text).
04.03.93 V1.04
I Professional Page Language-Modi added to LaserDriver/LaserPref.
I Max. printable graphics area assigned to Narrow/Wide-Tractor
paper size.
I Dry Hold time added to DeskDriver4C/DeskPref4C (StudioDry).
C Top margin CAP movement changed in LaserDriver.
Top margin is now equal to text base line instead of
baseline = top margin + 30 dots.
E LaserDriver aSUS3 command did not allways work.
27.03.93 V1.05
I Ricoh LP 1200 "Layout" language support added to LaserDriver.
I Very fast four color HP driver for Pagestream added.
I HP PCL 5 PageStream driver now uses mode 023 compression
resulting in an additional ~25% speed improvement.
I All programs on the Studio disk are now stored in a compressed
form. This new disk space available will be needed for upcoming
HP programs.
C The Narrow/Wide-Tractor settings introduced with the Studio V1.04
LaserDriver did not work 100% with all programs. With some
application programs the second page printed was shifted down
0.5cm. The feature should now work with all programs on any
page.
I DeskDriver, DeskDriver4C and LaserDriver:
Empty pages after graphic dumps are now avoided as far as possible.
22.04.93 V1.06
E Studio's V1.04 + V1.05 LaserDriver: using "PPage Offset"
with compression Mode 3, 023 or 5 may result in wrong graphic
output. Graphics seems to smear. Problem could be solved by selecting
Mode 0 or Mode 2 compression or by disabling "PPage Offset" setting.
Fixed.
26.04.93 V1.07
E There was bug in LaserDrivers mode 5 compression that may
theoreticly result in stripes/missing blocks in the
graphic output. This bug never showed up during the past
months and only affects LaserDrivers Mode 5 compression.
01.05.93 V1.08
C PrintMode is now set with every printable character, making sure
a FF is allways send in single page mode after a dump of several
FF-separated pages.
